【2006 Doha Asian Games】
DOHA -- Everyone knew China would dominate the Doha Asian Games, but few knew they could do in such an extreme way.
They swept 16 out of 20 gold medals on offer on the first day's official competition on Saturday, getting off to flying start towards its seventh consecutive feat of topping the medal tally since 1982.
Japan took three golds, including two from their traditional territory of judo and one from the swimming pool. Judokas Sae Nakazawa won the women's 78kg class while Muneta clinched men's over 100kg title.
Their other gold medal was from swimmer Sano Hidemasa in the men's 400m individual medley.
South Korea, fighting for the second place against Japan at the Games, managed only one from Jang Sung Ho, who claimed the men's 100kg judo title.
China claimed its first gold medal in the men's 10m air rifle team event early Saturday morning. Olympic champion Zhu Qinan, Li Jie and Liu Tianyou beat South Korea with 1,786 points to win the Games' first gold.
"It's a great start for the Chinese delegation," said Duan Shijie, deputy chef de mission of the Chinese delegation. "This gold is a perfect morale-boost for our fellow Chinese athletes to compete in this Games."
Little-known Liu Tianyou emerged as the hero of the defending Asian Games champions as the 24-year-old scored the highest 598 points.
Three Chinese shooters became double winners as China went on to clean-sweep all the day's six shooting gold medals.
Liu won his second in the men's 10m air rifle by collecting 700.8 points.
China's trap team, including Chen Li, Wang Yujin and Zhu Mei, beat DPR Korea to clinch the trap team event. Chen then added the women's trap gold to her team title.
Olympic champion Du Li grabbed the women's 10m air rifle individual gold before leading the Chinese trio, also consisting of Zhao Yinghui and Wu Liuxi, to win the women's rifle team title.
China's sweetest title came from the men's gymnastics team event. They overcame a 1.500-point deficit before the last rotation to beat Olympic champions Japan with 377.100 points, extending their men's team dominance for the ninth successive time at the Asian Games history.
Japan scored 4.050 points to finish second and South Korea totalled 371.500 to settle for the third. South Korean Yang Tae Young suffered a foot injury over landing of high bar, but he struggled to take the pommel horse and earned his team a bronze.
China took away all three weightlifting gold medals in the women's 48kg, 53rd classes and men's 56kg category. They also ruled the swimming pool, seizing five out of six gold medals to leave the remaining one to Japan.
World bronze medalist Wu Peng struck a brilliant victory to retain the men's 200m butterfly title under the pressure of two strong Japanese rivals.
Zhou Yafei and Pang Jiaying each had two gold medals to their names when defending champion Zhou won the women's 100m butterfly in 58.39 after Pang beat defending champion and teammate Yang Yu for the women's 200m freestyle gold in 1:59.26.
In the last event later Saturday night, the two rallied with Luo Nan (breaststroke) and Zhao Jing (backstroke) to bring in another gold for China in the 4x100m medley relay.
Asian champion Ji Liping of China took the first ever 50m breaststroke gold and set the Games record in 31.52. The 50m breaststroke was added to the Asian Games program for the first time.
In judo action, Tong Wen was the only Chinese winner, beating Tserenkhand Dorjgotov of Mongolia with ippon to take the women's over 78kg title.
A total of 28 gold medals will be decided on the second day's competition on Sunday.

Money can buy happiness, up to a point
Can money buy happiness? Yes, claim the authors of a new study -- but only up to a point .
Psychology has shown that richer people generally rank the overall quality of their lives more favorably than poorer people do. At the same time, their actual happiness seems to be motivated less by their ability to buy more than by being able to keep up with those with comparable resources in their own age group.
"Our findings point to the possibility that, rather than promoting overall happiness, continued income growth could promote an ongoing consumption race where individuals have to consume more and more, just to maintain a constant level of happiness," writes Glenn Firebaugh of Pennsylvania State University.
The study was presented at the American Sociological Association's 100th Annual Meeting.
Whether the affluent are happier as a whole than their less well-to-do counterparts is becoming an increasingly hot topic for debate. In recent years, much has been written regarding the "science of happiness."
Richer people are happier because money can purchase goods and services and it is the consumption of these materials that increases one's enjoyment of life and one's sense of well-being.
As incomes in the U.S. tend to rise over the course of our lifetimes, individuals may find themselves on a sort of treadmill , consuming more and more just to maintain a constant level of happiness, they write.
Firebaugh and his colleagues measured the age, total family income, and general happiness of individuals aged 20 to 64, generally considered the working life span for most Americans.
Regardless of such criteria as physical health, education, and marital status, people's happiness was affected by what others earned. The higher the income of others in one's age group, the lower one's happiness.

Cherish your love and win free dinner!
Such is the bonus a western style restaurant in Fangcun district, Guangzhou, offers to couples who take love seriously.
A couple having dinner in this restaurant will be invited to take a free instant photo in two copies. One is kept by the couple and the other by the restaurant. If the couple backs to the restaurant together with the photo today next year, the restaurant will offer them a free set dinner.
There are already over 100 sweet pictures on the walls of the restaurant. 'Nowadays people like fast-food-style relationship, and do not cherish love as much as before. I want to do something to remind them what love should be like.' said Chen, the manager here.
Women are more likely than men to keep joint possessions when getting divorced, according to research.
Men on average wanted their ex to keep 19 items from a list of 24 including the home, photographs and pets, while women wanted the men to get just eight.
While women did not particularly want items including the television, CDs, DVDs, and toaster, they were keen their ex-husband did not get them.
YouGov polled 3,515 people in May and June. The poll found men were keen for their ex to keep items including the bed, television, wedding album, lawnmower and garden accessories, house plants, coffee machine and the family pet.
One item that men were determined to keep for themselves was the house - 32% wanted it to keep it outright , compared with 30% who were happy to wholly hand it over to their ex-wife.
The men also wanted the car, the laptop computer, digital camera and CD and DVD collections.
Half of women wanted the family home outright, but even more - 64% - wanted the dog or cat.
They were happy for their former husband to keep the bed, sofa, lawnmower, coffee machine, laptop, digital camera, PlayStation and any wine and drinks they had.
Ultimately 46% of women did keep the house, compared with 29% of men, with other couples selling.
Denise Knowles, a counselor, said: "These findings reflect the hugely different emotional attachment that divorcing men and women feel towards their shared possessions.
"Men are far keener than women to put their past behind them and want to move on, which is why they are happy to let their ex keep almost all of their shared possessions - apart from those items that provide entertainment such as the car, digital camera and music system.
"Women, by contrast, have a far greater emotional attachment to their home and its contents, seeing these things as the fabric of their lives and things that should be preserved both for themselves and any children as symbols of their family history and life."

Christmas will only come once a year, Santas insistSome 80 Santas from around the globe meeting at their World Congress debated establishing a second Christmas in July to ease their December workload, but finally decided that the holiday would be feted only once a year, the Danish Santa host said.
"There was a proposal from the Japanese Santa Claus that was hotly debated, but the delegates, even if they were in favour of the idea, did not want to adopt it because it risks upsetting the children of the world," Denmark's Father Christmas told reporters.
"The Christmas date of December 24-25 will not be changed, even though we are about to collapse from overwork. The tradition must be respected," he said.
Earlier, the spokeswoman for the convention had announced that the congress had decided to approve two Christmases, one on July 24-25 for the southern hemisphere and another one on December 24-25 for the northern hemisphere.
The 42nd annual convention was held this week at the world's oldest theme park, Bakken, north of Copenhagen.
On Wednesday, the Santas and their little elf helpers handed out gifts to delighted children at Bakken, after holding a parade in the streets of Copenhagen Tuesday. The Santas have been meeting in Denmark every summer since 1963.
One noticeable absentee, however, is the Finnish Santa, who has boycotted the event for years over his refusal to acknowledge that the one true Santa is the one from Greenland.

Long working hours 'health risk'
Working long hours can greatly increase the risk of suffering injury or illness, a study says.
Workers who do overtime were 61% more likely to become hurt or ill, once factors such as age and gender were taken into account.
And working more than 12 hours a day raised the risk by more than a third, the University of Massachusetts found.
Report co-author Allard Dembe said risk was not necessarily associated with how hazardous the job was.
"The results of this study suggest that jobs with long working hours are not more risky merely because they are concentrated in inherently hazardous industries or occupations."
And he said the findings, published in the Occupational and Environmental Health journal, supported initiative such as the 48-hour European Working Time Directive to cut the number of working hours.
From the records, researchers found 5,139 work-related injuries and illnesses, ranging from stress to cuts, burns and muscle injuries.
More than half of these injuries and illnesses occurred in jobs with extended working hours or overtime.
The researchers concluded that the more hours worked, the greater the risk of injury.
But they did not find that lengthy commutes to and from work had any impact on illness and injury.
In the UK 14% of the working population - 3.6m - work more than 48 hours a week.

Maradona owns up to 'Hand of God'
Diego Maradona acknowledged that he struck the ball with his hand in the famous "Hand of God" goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals.
Speaking on his local television talk show Monday night, Maradona called one of soccer's most controversial goals "something that just came out of me. It was a bit of mischief."
Maradona appeared to punch the ball into the net, and officials allowed the goal to stand despite protests by the English team. Argentina went on to win the 1986 quarterfinal match 2-1 and then win the World Cup.
In his most detailed comments yet, Maradona said he was unable to reach the ball for a header when he went up against the taller English goalkeeper, Peter Shilton.
Shilton "was very tall. He didn't see anything, and a teammate told him" afterward what happened, said Maradona.
After the score, Maradona said he quickly realized the line referee had allowed the goal but none of his teammates had rushed to celebrate with him -- themselves figuring the goal would be waved off.
"I was waiting for my teammates to embrace me and no one came," said Maradona, who was the team captain. "I told them, 'Come hug me or the referee isn't going to allow it."'
In his 20-year career before retiring in 1997, Maradona starred at Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors and in Europe. He also led Argentina to the 1990 World Cup final and won Italian and Argentine league titles.
In 1991, Maradona failed a drug test and was banned for 15 months. Nine years later, FIFA chose him and Pele as the best players in soccer history.
Recently, he was appointed vice president of Boca Juniors. And with his new TV show, Maradona, 45, has returned to the limelight after years of dealing with cocaine addiction and health problems.

“Weekend syndrome” plagues urban singles
For those who have been working hard for a whole week, the weekend is a happy time for them to relax and refresh. However, nowadays, many urban singles find that they don't know how to spend the two-day break.
Ms. Zhang is a manager at a public relations company. Her daily life is packed with numerous interpersonal activities, which makes her feel much stressed. Her way to spend the weekend is to turn off her mobile phone and cut off her contact with the outside world and then go to sleep. However, after two days of sleep, Ms. Zhang finds that she is even more depressed.
Ms. Han works in a government office. Every weekend, this young lady hangs out with her friends from many other circles. But even so, Ms. Han always feels like she has had a boring weekend.
Psychologists say that these young people are suffering from "weekend syndrome." The patients usually feel that they have no interest in doing anything. They become anxious when the weekend approaches and they don't know what to do during their time off. They may suffer from depression, insomnia and other psychological diseases.
To deal with the problem, experts advise single people to make more friends and develop their own hobbies. Meanwhile, they advise people to hold moderated expectations about the weekend break, and to avoid making a too tight of a plan for how to spend their time.

Daniel Radcliffe becomes the youngest person to make this year's Sunday Times Rich List.
The 17-year-old "Harry Potter" star's wealth raised 8 million in the past year, as royalties come through, taking him to an estimated 14 million, and placing him firmly among the list of the nation's 5,000 wealthiest people.
Philip Beresford, who put the list together, said Radcliffe - thanks to the ongoing Potter series would not have to worry about finance for a very long time.
"He is still at school but he is in a position where he will never have to work again. Money has been pouring in to his personal company, largely from royalties he is paid every time the films are shown on TV", said Beresford.
"If he wants to go to university, we can safely say he won't need to worry about a student loan", added Philip.
The youngest woman on the list is soul singer Joss Stone. The 19 year-old singer has only released two albums so far but has collected an estimated fortune of 6 million.

In ancient times those who wanted to learn would seek out a teacher, one who could propagate the doctrine, impart professional knowledge, and resolve doubts. Since no one is born omniscient, who can claim to have no doubts? If one has doubts and is not willing to learn from a teacher, his doubts will never be resolved. Anyone who was born before me and learned the doctrine before me is my teacher. Anyone who was born after me and learned the doctrine before me is also my teacher. Since what I desire to learn is the doctrine, why should I care whether he was born before or after me? Therefore, it does not matter whether a person is high or low in position, young or old in age. Where there is the doctrine, there is my teacher.
Alas! The tradition of learning from the teacher has long been neglected. Thus it is difficult to find a person without any doubts at all. Ancient sages, who far surpassed us, even learned from their teachers. People today, who are far inferior to them, regard learning from the teacher as a disgrace. Thus, wise men become more wise and unlearned men become more foolish. This explains what makes a wise man and what makes a foolish man.
It is absurd that a person would choose a teacher for his son out of his love for him, and yet refuse to learn from the teacher himself, thinking it a disgrace to do so. The teacher of his son teaches the child only reading and punctuation, which is not propagating the doctrine or resolving doubts as the aforementioned. I don"t think it wise to learn from the teacher when one doesn"t know how to punctuate, but not when one has doubts unresolved, for that I find to be the folly of learning in small matters, but neglecting the big ones. Even medicine men, musicians and handicraftsmen do not think it disgraceful to learn from each other. When one of the literati calls another man his "teacher"and himself his "student" people will get together and invariably laugh at him. If you ask them why they are laughing, they will say that since he is almost of the same age and as erudite as another man, it would be degrading for him to call the other man "teacher" if the other man"s social rank is lower than his; and it would be flattering if the other man"s social rank is higher. Alas! It is clear that the tradition of learning from the teacher can no longer be restored. Medicine men, musicians and handicraftsmen are despised by the gentlemen. How strange it is that gentlemen are less wise than these people!
The ancient sages did not limit themselves to particular teachers. Confucius had learned from people like Tanzi2, Changhong3, Shixiang4, and Laodan5, who were not as virtuous and talented as Confucius. Confucius said "If three men are walking together, one of them is bound to be good enough to be my teacher."A student is not necessarily inferior to his teacher, nor does a teacher necessarily be more virtuous and talented than his student. The real fact is that one might have learned the doctrine earlier than the other, or might be a master in his own special field.
Pan, the son of Li"s family, who is only seventeen years old, loves to study Chinese classics of the Qin and Han dynasties, and masters the six jing6 and their annotations. He does not follow conventions and is willing to learn from me. I appreciate his ability to act in accordance with the old tradition of learning. Therefore I dedicate this piece to him.

Study links lack of snooze to weight gain in women
A study conducted on more than 68,000 middle-aged US women suggests that females who don't get enough sleep may end up adding some extra pounds over years.
Researchers followed 68,183 middle-aged women for 16 years and found that those who slept 5 hours or less per night were one third more likely to gain weight than those who slept for 7 hours.
Moreover, researchers found that the weight gain was substantial with some women even gaining 33 pounds or more.
The associations between sleep duration and weight gain persisted even after controlling for factors such as physical activity and calorie consumption in both groups.
The findings, presented earlier this year at a medical conference and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, furthers the evidence that sleep habits affect a person's weight.
The exact reasons for association between sleep duration and weight gain aren't clear but some research suggests that sleep deprivation alters hormones involved in appetite control and metabolism.
Also it's possible that people who sleep fewer hours either eat more or, because of fatigue, and exercise less often.
The research was led by Dr. Sanjay R. Patel of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Macau may be firmly back in China's orbit, but the Portuguese patina on this Sino-Lusitanian Las Vegas makes it a most unusual Asian destination. It has always been overshadowed by its glitzy near-neighbour Hong Kong - which is precisely why it's so attractive.

Wooden spoon:
Wooden spoon
Bob got a wooden spoon in the most beautiful Garden Competition.(鲍勃在评选“最美花园竞赛”中获最差奖。)
The person who finishes last in this competition will be granted a wooden spoon.

This region of Guangdong has always had a high rate of emigration. One major wave to Canada and the US started in the 1800s, as workers were needed for mining and railway construction. When the Chinese emigrants saved some wealth overseas, they returned home or sent money to their families to build a diaolou. The peak period of diaolou construction was in the 1920s and 30s. A few are more than 400 years old, and the newest dates 1948.
The styles of the diaolou vary greatly. As the emigrants went overseas, the styles of their new homes influenced the styles of their diaolou. They combine Greek, Roman, Gothic, Baroque, Muslim, Southeast Asian and traditional Chinese elements. The most recent diaolou were built with modern, imported materials such as steel and reinforced concrete. After the residents became affluent, their wealth attracted bandits and required new diaolou to be fortified. (not complete)

Man recalls being first Disneyland visitor
Dave MacPherson may have been the first paying guest at Disneyland when the theme park opened its gates 50 years ago, but he didn't even have time for one ride. In a hurry to get back to campus for a college class, he instead visited a restroom after spending hours in line and left without as much as a souvenir.
Still, the honor of being the first paid admission came with a special perk: a lifetime pass for four to Disneyland and other Disney parks as they opened.
"I was the most popular guy at the college," said MacPherson, now 72, a retired journalist living in Monticello, Utah, about 240 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.
He's taken full advantage of it scores of times, especially when he lived in California. Usage dwindled after he moved to Kansas City, Mo., to work for newspapers and radio.
But being closer to California has made it more useful, and he last made the trip a year ago with his wife, Wanda. He receives a VIP renewal every January.
In 1955, MacPherson was watching televised coverage of the opening of Disneyland for the media and invited guests on July 17, 1955, a day before the park opened to the public.
"I said, 'Boy, I sure would like to go out there,'" said MacPherson, who figured he might draw a prize for standing first in line.
He drove his Simplex motorbike to Anaheim, arriving shortly before 1 a.m. to take his place in line an hour before anyone else showed up.
The crowd steadily grew overnight to about 6,000 people, and MacPherson made sure no one got in front of him. When the admission booth opened, a photographer for the Long Beach Press-Telegram captured him buying the first ticket.
Looking at the photo years later, he realized he had his own camera but didn't use it.
"Why didn't I shoot some pictures?" he wonders. "I even forgot to ask Walt (Disney) for his autograph. I must have been balmy or something after staying up all night."

Zili village is famous for a cluster of several well-preserved diaolou. Two of the buildings offer a glimpse on how people lived 80 years ago. Traditional Chinese furniture is mixed with Western style objects and appliances – like a gramophone and a sea trunk marked with the label of a San Francisco shipping company.

Shanghai team targets smile shortage
According to a recent online survey by Extrawhite, a maker of chewing gum, a quarter of the people in China never smile or smile less than five times a day. The survey found that only 2 per cent of Chinese people are willing to smile at strangers.
To reverse this situation, a group of 40 students from the Humanities and Communications College of Shanghai Normal University launched a team of "smiling volunteers" last month. Their technique is simple enough: they smile at people.
They carried out their first "smiling task" on Saturday at the Shanghai Film Art Centre, where they smiled at all the visitors and asked if anyone needed any help.
"We started to prepare for this special team back in October," said Dai Ningning, a teacher at the college who is in charge of the team.
But the team's work is not all fun and games. Dai suggested that the team's work also had a professional component. "Most of our students will be teachers after they graduate. Smiling is necessary for good teachers. We hope they will learn how to smile at each other properly before they become teachers," she said.
Dai added that she had high hopes for the "smiling volunteers" team.
"The team will recruit more members in the future. We have no special requirements for the students who want to be members of the team. The only requirement is that they have sincere smiles and helping hearts, and are always ready to assist other people," she said.
Xu Xiaohong, a first-grade post-graduate student at the university, leads the team. She said that not all students found it easy to smile all the time.
"When volunteers help other people, smiling is the best way to make other people understand that the volunteers are ready and sincere," she said. "Smiles can also erase a sense of strangeness among people who do not know each other."
